The Fjoerdur
- Elves and Trolls Tour

An interesting ride through
three valleys of Northern Iceland.

We ride along the valley of Fnjoska river which is the longest freshwater river in Iceland. Some 10,000 years ago there was a glacial lake in this valley whose shore is still visible in the slopes of the mountains.
We have a look at the famous church and turfhouses at Laufas and ride along impressive woods to Hjardarholt farmhouse. Enjoy the magnificent view to the mouth of the Fnjóská river and into the Eyjafjordur fjord the next day!
On the fifth day we ride to Fjordur, a deserted countryside populated only by 4’000 sheep and the trolls and elves. Names like Trolladalur - valley of the trolls and Alfaborgir - cities of the elves - remind us of the existence of these invisible beings. They have chosen some of the best places for their homes. Old volcanoes, glaciers, little ponds and an amazingly green landscape greet us.
The next three days will be spent enjoying the idyllic life and fascinating atmosphere of this special area.

Itinerary
Ride through three valleys in the North of Iceland

Saturday
Our guests are picked up at Akureyri airport or the bus station. A 30 minutes drive will bring us to the farmhouse Grytubakki. On the way you may admire the beautiful view over Eyjafjbr6ur.
After lunch we catch the horses and saddle up. Every rider gets a suitable horse. Then we will leave for our first 4- hour trip down to the river Gljufuri and around the mountain H6f6i. The view over the, beautiful fjord and the island Hrisey is breathtaking. During this short tour each rider can make friendship with his' horse, the one he will also ride through the wilderness of Fj6r6ur. Dinner and overnight at Grytubakki or in Grenivik, the nearby village.

Sunday:  Breakfast will give us the necessary power for the following three- day- trip to the peninsula Fj6r6ur. A pack horse will carry our sleeping bags and the food we need for these days. Each rider gets a small saddlebag where he can put his own private things like toothbrush, some extra socks and of course the camera.
Fjordur is a mysterious and deserted countryside. It has been closed off from the rest of the world for 40 years. Only about 4000 sheep spend the summertime here every year, together with the trolls and elves. Names like Tr6liadalur, the valley of the trolls and Alfaborgir, the cities of the elves remind us of the existence of these invisible beings.
We ride through the woody slopes of Hvalvatnsfj6r6ur. The mountains are extremely beautiful and the cliffs are reflected in the ponds. The route to Porgeirsfjodour is unforgetable and we stay at 136nglabakki, the old main farm of Fj6r6ur. Here we will stay for two nights either in the hut or in tents.

Monday:  After a long and powerful breakfast we want to discover the surroundings of the hut. The view over the sea is extraordinary and if we are lucky we can see the island Grimsey which is situated right on the polar circle.
We ride over to the Hvalvatnsfj6r6ur and from there around H6f6i mountain along steep cliffs. There is a mysterious lake on top of this mountain: Nykurtj6m. We will tell you the story about it! After lunch we saddle up again and ride into the valleys Hoisdalur and Bakkadalur. Here we can let the horses run! Fast T61t and Galopp show you how powerful the Icelandic horse can be. This valley has a lot of secrets - it's one of the oldest regions of Iceland.

Tuesday:
It is time to leave. The way back will seem much easier to you as you are now used to your horse and the landscape. We will reach Grytubakki or Grenivik in the end of the day.
After these days in the wilderness of Fj6r6ur we will enjoy the warm water of the hot pool in Grenivik.

Wednesday:
After breakfast we ride through the valley of Fnj6sk6. The river Fnj6sk6 is the longest freshwater river in Iceland. For approx. 1 0'000 years ago there was a glacial lake in this valley. The shore of this lake is still visible in the slopes of the mountains. We ride along the river and reach in the end of the day farmhouse Ytri-Holl at the bottom of Garosfell. Here we let the horses graze and drive back home. Dinner and Overnight.

Thursday:  We drive to the horses and ride from farmhouse Ytri-H6[1 into Flateyrardalur. An overwhelming landscape awaits you. Nobody lives in this valley any more -the last inhabitants left a long time ago. Only sheep graze here over summer time looking for the best tasting herbs.
We cross river Arbugsei, ride along Kr6kafjall and leave Flateyrardalur at the Farmhouse Over6. If possible we cross the river Fnj6sk6 to ride back home on the other side of the valley. Dinner and overnight.

Friday:  This is our sightseeing day! After breakfast we have a look at some of the pearls of the North, like the old turhouses at Laufcls and the waterfall Go6afoss. We participate in a whale watching tour near Husavik.

Saturday:
After breakfast, transfer to Akureyri and there we say our good-byes to our guests.

We reserve the right to change any itinerary. This will not reduce the quality of our tours.
