1. Nine Glacier´s Panorama
Hidden Trails presents for a first time a special tour covering parts of all three traditional highland routes: Sprengisandur, Kjölur and Arnarvatnsheiði. During this tour we will ride past nine glaciers and cross numerous rivers. Our hosts are Bjarni Páll, Elsa and Sævar, known from the popular Northern Exposure and Diamond Circle tours. We start from their farm Saltvík in the North and on the 3rd day we enter the mysterious Sprengisandur Trail. Legends, ghost stories and songs describe this highland trail. The huge glaciers of Vatnajökull and Hofsjökull, surrounded by sand and lava fields and mighty glacier fed rivers characterize this remote wilderness. We ride to Hveravellir on the Kjölur Trail, a true oasis in the wilderness with a natural hot pool, before crossing between the north end of Langjökull Glacier and KrákurMountain. En route we will ride through Djöflasand (the Devil’s sand) and past Dauðsmannsgil (dead man’s canyon) through the beautiful Arnarvatnsheiði area.
Travelling from north to south-west or vice versa right across the heart of Iceland you will find yourself in remote desert-like areas surrounded by huge glaciers, and yet again in vast green meadows where only young horses and sheep roam free during summer. Accommodation on this ride is in rustic mountain cabins in the middle of Iceland’s untamed nature.

2. Highlights of the East
This is the perfect opportunity to combine a highland tour with a beach ride! Discover the incredible wild beauty of East Iceland in a region not known by many people. We explore the untamed nature north of Europe's largest glacier Vatnajökull, where large herds of reindeer roam free and the sure footed Icelandic horse is the only way of transportation. View the beautiful valley Hrafnkelsdalur where the sagas about heroic Vikings come alive.
We will stay overnight at Sænautasel, a reconstructed 18th century farm. This tour also takes us to the fertile area of Hróarstunga, between the two mighty rivers; Jökulsá á Brú and Lagarfljót. We stay overnight at Húsey Farm in beautiful surroundings with rich bird life and seals playing on the beach.
Our hosts, Jón Thór and his wife Margaret, have been our partners for many years. There are probably very few people who know the rugged wilderness better than Jón Thór, a sheep farmer, a true natural horseman and a unique character with a passion and respect for the rough landscape of the East. With warmth and dedication, Jón Thór takes good care of his guests.
