A Working Ranch near Saratoga, Wyoming

Brush Creek Ranch, Wyoming

Stand in the middle of Laramie Plains this ranch and the Sierra Madre Mountains linger on the horizon, across the valley to the west and southwest. Nestled below the adjacent million-acre Medicine Bow National Forest, the ranch is a diamond in this rough and beautiful corner of Southeast Wyoming. You'll find that every view, especially the one from our verandah, is fantastic!
The ranch is not a resort; it's a six-thousand-acre working cattle and guest ranch. There are no tennis courts; the nearest golf course is eighteen miles down the valley in Saratoga. However, you aren't likely to find yourself with time on your hands, unless that is what you came up here for. Stand knee-deep in a mountain stream with a trout tugging at your line or get a little trail dust in your saddle as you search for elk in the aspen. They extend their hand - come up to the Laramie Plains  Ranch for a genuine Western experience.
Imagine horseback riding through a diverse mountain terrain. Imagine yourself fly fishing in world class waters. Imagine hiking up to view the world from over 12,000 feet. If you can imagine these things, then you are one step closer to discovering the adventures we offer here at Brush Creek Ranch.

Head 'em Up and Move 'em Out
You may decide that the view is the best from on top of your horse. We offer horseback riding for riders of different abilities and comfort levels, from the experienced saddle tramp to the tenderfoot. We'll fit you to a saddle and take you out across some of the West's most beautiful terrain. The area around here offers every variety of ride experience, from soft, gently rolling hay meadows to more challenging mountain trails -- let the wranglers take you where you want to go.
Because we use a rotational grazing system on the ranch, it's likely that you will have a genuine opportunity to help move the cattle from one pasture to another. An additional chance to get involved comes during our annual Roundup during the last two weeks in August. These weeks cover a variety of activities, including gathering and sorting the cattle on 2-3 days each week..

"A Western Adventure"
Experience another western tradition by taking an overnight pack trip.  This adventure takes you to the top of Jim Draw, where you'll bed down among the Aspens.  Packhorses have been used for years as a means of transporting equipment across the western plains, a means still used here at Laramie Plains Ranch.  Bring your favorite stories to tell around the campfire and join us on the trail.

Lodging
The ranch's history began many years ago when homesteaders who were following the construction of the railroad across the land, settled the valley in the 1800's. All buildings are original to the ranch; the changes that have been made are only to make your stay more comfortable. The lodge was built in the early 1900's and, like the other buildings, retains its spirit of history and Old West authenticity. The friendly staff and the small number of guests contribute to the warm, close-knit feeling you'll find. Meals are in the ranch tradition with guests and staff dining together. Menu's tend to be ranch style; however, we always try to accommodate special requests if you let us know ahead of your visit.
The coveted Orvis endorsement is an indication of the quality of the accommodations. Eleven rooms are available, six in our three-story 6,500-square-foot lodge, built in the early 1900s. The remaining five rooms are in nearby original log cabins. All of the newly-remodeled rooms reflect the rustic elegance of this historic property. Each room is unique and has its
own bath.
"Dancing in the Loft"
Barn dances are enjoyed by all, young, old and even those of us with two left feet! Learn line dances, western swing, the two step, and of course the Ranch Reel. A great way to complete a great stay out west.

Flyfishing
There is nothing quite like the peace and serenity that you will find fishing on Brush Creek Ranch or else where in the North Platte River Valley. We have over three private miles of Brush Creek running through the ranch allowing anglers to enjoy the pleasures of small creek fishing. Brush Creek isn't too small though, there have been numerous trout landed that go eighteen inches plus! We are also located near the upper section of the blue ribbon North Platte River. Try a float trip with one of our Orivis guides down the majestic North Platte and match wits with the wild trout in this exceptional free stone river. Overnight float trips are also available. Call for details. Or you may choose to wade fish with one of our Orivis guides or by yourself on some of the public access areas around the valley. The North Platte River is home to wild brown, rainbow, and cuthroat trout that will average around 16 inches in size with an occasional 24 incher!
The Encampment River is another amazing stretch of water. Floating the Encampment during the green drake hatch is as close to anglers heaven as you can get. Call for hatch updates and fishing reports for both rivers. During the summer months the small creeks and alpine lakes of the Snowy Range Mountains offer excellent fishing. Several of these mountain lakes have golden trout, and there are Brookies everywhere. These lakes and streams are also nestled in one of the most beautiful mountain ranges in the west. Wildlife abounds in the Medicine Bow National Forest, giving you the chance to see moose, elk, mule deer, black bear, mountain lion, and an occasional big horn sheep. Ride-n-fish trips are available as are overnight pack-n-fish trips and multi day pack-n-fish trips.

Children's Program

Brush Creek Ranch offers 5 half-day programs that are included in a week long stay. They are designed to teach children about authentic ranch life and include quality time spent outdoors. We offer a variety of activities, which include exploration, education, and fun. Take a close look at the options below and let us know your child's interests. The children's program is specifically for ages 3 - 6, but it can be adapted to other ages. We also offer daily opportunities for younger children to ride while our wranglers provide appropriate guidance and instruction creating the opportunity for individual success. When a child demonstrates the necessary skills to ride outside of the corral, opportunity exists for them to do so providing both parents and wranglers are in agreement.

Horse-Play - Children acquire hands on experience while learning beginning horsemanship, grooming, tacking, hoof-care, and riding. Everyone will have the opportunity to ride one of our beginner horses under wrangler supervision.

Breafast on the Ranch - Children will accompany our cooks to our special cookout site and assist them in `setting up camp`. They will enjoy breakfast cooked over the campfire with the wranglers and their riders.  Often, this is where they meet up with their parents and/or other guests.  Any child who possesses rudimentary riding skills is allowed to join in on the ride to the cookout.  After breakfast, guests separate into different skill level groups and take a morning ride.

Wildflower Safari - Enjoy a morning of exploring the wildflowers found around Brush Creek. During the group safari, learn to identify flowers, their names, and old Indian uses they may have.  Younger children enjoy creating their own western artwork using wildflower pigment.

Ranch Residers - Explore the ranch and find evidence of wildlife while learning about the animals that live in the area.  Looking for tracks and guessing what animal made them is a highlight of this activity.

The Life of a Cowboy - Learn about the tricks of the trade of a real live cowboy, like roping, branding and tending cattle.

These Streams are made for Wading - Forge Brush Creek and learn all about the creek and its ecosystem. Be prepared for you child to get muddy and wet!

Make your Mark - Children are exposed to brands and their meanings. They are given the opportunity to create their own brand and take it to the evening cookout to be used during the branding demo.  They are also allowed to use our hot branding irons (with instruction and supervision) to brand their own piece of  wood to take home as an authentic souvenir.

Other activities are also available throughout the week. We are also happy to arrange additional child care at a minimal cost of  $4/hour for one child plus $1/hour for additional children. We make it a priority to include all family members in our regular activities whenever possible.
